Restoring Detroit’s Tree Canopy

Detroit was once known as the “city of trees,” but disease, invasive insects, and budget cuts over time have decimated our area’s distinctive tree canopy. But efforts are underway to replenish trees while also providing job training, green spaces, education, and community engagement. On Oct. 31, 2024, Sustainable Business Network Detroit hosted an informative discussion sponsored by the Fred and Barbara Erb Family Foundation regarding these efforts and how restoring tree canopy benefits individuals, neighborhoods, businesses, and the economy. The panelists were: Lionel Bradford, president and executive director, Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training, and involving youth in the education of the natural environment. It involves Detroiters in the process through community engagement, green spaces, education, and jobs.     Maureen Donohue Krauss, president and CEO, Detroit Regional Partnership. DRP works to serve as a single point of contact for information, connection to services, incentives, and data for businesses who want to locate or expand in the 11-county Southeast Michigan Region.     Robert Riney, president and CEO, Henry Ford Health, and leader of HFH’s $4 billion Destination: Grand initiative. The project includes a $2.2 billion expansion of HFH’s Detroit campus anchored by a new state-of-the-art hospital facility that will span 1.2 million square feet. It includes a 20-story patient tower, with three floors dedicated to providing intensive inpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation in partnership with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and its own Central Energy Hub, making it one of the largest fully electric-capable hospitals in the country.   The event was moderated by Terry Barclay, president and CEO of Inforum, and chair of SBN Detroit. Some of the takeaways: The case for tree canopy Lionel: Growing up in Southeast Louisiana – which is very hot – you quickly learn the value of a tree. It’s also a sportsman’s paradise – We did a lot of hunting, fishing, and camping, and I developed a great appreciation for the environment and its value. I also love people. The work that we do is about people at the end of the day, so when we do this work it’s to build community and neighborhoods. We try our very best – changing landscapes and lives is our motto. When someone has been incarcerated for 20 years and needs a second chance, they can come through your program – the Detroit Conservation Corps – and they can be trained and support their families. You can train people to put trees in the ground and maintain them. Maureen: Part of my role is to inform people that economic development is more than just a new factory in your town, more than just a tax abatement. It’s creating an environment that both people and companies want to be in. Sixty percent of our projects are from international companies – when people come here for the first time, they have expectations of what a first-class city looks like… Think about Paris and its phenomenal tree canopies. People want that here. I did a little research before this event: Homes with trees sell two days faster and for 15% more than homes without. Tree value increases with age – the cost of trees has 100% payback. Three properly placed trees can reduce air conditioning by 56% and reduce home heating bills by 10% by serving as a windbreak. Bob: You may think what does a healthcare system have to do with tree canopies? HFH is absolutely committed to increasing the health of communities – the role that hospitals and doctors play is about 20%. We don’t underestimate the power of that 20%, but true health – meaning how long people will live and have a high-value life – is a partnership of healthcare, policy, and environmental factors – which are huge. You may have seen that the biggest determinant of your health is the ZIP Code that you live in. You need to have fabulous healthcare, access to it, economic security, environmental security, and food and nutrition security. At HFH we need to be a population health company – we pick and choose how we should make our mark and one of the things we believe in is the power of the tree. We have to walk the talk. The economic benefits of tree canopy Maureen: Our organization has three pillars: market, grow, and support. It’s so much better now. People are curious to hear about Detroit and see what’s happening. Talent is No. 1 – we have the second-highest amount of engineers in the country and have experienced manufacturing talent. As one of my teammates says, it’s workforce, weather, and water. When you talk about climate change, Michigan will be in the top five least affected. The right amount of tree canopy and how trees are sourced Lionel: American Forests did a study and determined that a city the size of Detroit should be at 40%. Right now we’re at 26%. We lose about 2,000 trees a year, so those have to be taken into account. We get most of our trees from New York and Indiana and, more recently, Wholesale Tree Inc. in Northern Michigan. More importantly, we’re growing our own trees now – running the Walter Meyers Nursery in Rouge Park, which is owned by the city. We’re very intentional about turning into a full-fledged operational business. Last year, we harvested our first set of trees. We have lost a lot of trees over time, and the reason we have lost a lot of those is because the city lacked the resources, and dead trees were not removed and were taken down by storms. This administration has done a great job by taking trees down when dead and dying. Working with DTE has been quite thrilling – they have given financial support to planting trees but also to making sure that the next generation of environmental stewards are trained by supporting our Green Corps summer programs and also the tree

THRIVE Collaborative’s Approach to Sustainable Development

THRIVE Collaborative is an Ann Arbor-based real estate development, design, building, and consulting firm dedicated to creating life-enhancing, grid-interactive buildings that harvest their own energy and water, create zero waste, and are beautiful and restorative. Its current project – Veridian at County Farm in Ann Arbor – is a 100% electric development, powered by solar with no gas lines or combustion appliances. It is targeted to be one of the nation’s first mixed-income net zero energy communities. SBN Detroit interviewed Matt Grocoff, THRIVE Collaborative founder and lead on the Veridian project, to find out more. Q:  How do you approach creating buildings that harvest their energy and water and create zero waste, and how long have you been doing this work? A: Thrive Collaborative approaches sustainable development by aiming to create buildings and communities that align with what is necessary for the future. Our flagship project, Veridian, is a model for addressing pressing climate challenges. When we started Veridian in 2016, we were guided by the goals of the Paris Agreement, which sets a target of keeping global temperature increases below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This means eliminating fossil fuels and using only renewable energy to power buildings. I see Veridian as an act of optimism. It is a 100% all-electric community, with no gas or fossil fuels. It’s powered entirely by on-site renewable energy, including solar panels, battery storage, and geothermal systems. Every home in the development produces more energy than it consumes, ensuring it is not only sustainable but capable of energy storage for future use. The idea is to show that what we need to do for the planet can also create a beautiful and socially just way of living. Q: In your experience, what are the biggest challenges in integrating sustainable practices into real estate development in Southeast Michigan? A: One of the biggest challenges we face is that there is no existing template for what we are trying to accomplish. The science of sustainability is clear, but the regulatory framework, building codes, and conventional construction practices in the U.S. don’t match what we are trying to achieve. Veridian uses a specific permeable road surface called Ecoraster. This is an eco-friendly, flexible, porous paver made from 10% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled plastics. However, the material was initially rejected by the city. We had to prove it met the necessary standards, which took nine months to do. This is one of dozens – maybe hundreds of examples of outdated building codes and policies that just don’t align to support the materials and practices we are employing. There are also challenges related to training contractors and tradespeople in new, sustainable methods. Q: How have you navigated these challenges? A: The key is to approach it knowing that sustainable development is both necessary and possible. There are always people who say, “That’s not how construction is done,” but that resistance creates an opportunity for innovation. Q: What role does Veridian play in the broader sustainability movement in Southeast Michigan, and what are your long-term goals for this project? A: At a micro level, Veridian Farms is about creating a model neighborhood that implements the necessary solutions for sustainability. The project serves as a case study for what’s possible when we fully embrace renewable energy, energy efficiency, and zero-waste practices. At a macro level, the goal is to demonstrate that these methods can and should be replicated across Southeast Michigan and beyond. The science is telling us that we need to cut global carbon emissions in half by 2030 to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. By showing that this level of sustainability is possible today, we hope to inspire policymakers, developers, and financial systems to support and scale these efforts. Q: What are the economic implications of building sustainable communities like Veridian? A: There’s often a misconception that building sustainably is prohibitively expensive, but that’s not the case when you take a holistic view. While technologies like geothermal heating and certain types of appliances might cost more upfront, they pay off over time. Solar panels, for example, lock in energy costs for 30 years, which is far more economical than relying on fossil fuels, whose prices fluctuate. When we look at costs holistically — factoring in the environmental impact of conventional practices — sustainable building becomes the more affordable option. We must rethink what “cost” means, not just in terms of the price of materials but in terms of the long-term health of the planet and the people who live in these homes. Q: What is the timeline for Veridian? A: We proposed the project in 2016. It took a couple of years to get approved. We are almost to year nine and we have our first residents living there now. The renewable energy systems are up and running and every home is producing more energy than it uses. Homes are heated and cooled with energy provided by the sun. Instead of storm drains, we have bioswales and butterfly gardens and birds and plants. We engineer using plants and pipes, but we use natural systems to operate more elegantly than the conventional expensive, and unsustainable storm drain systems. By the end of the year, we’ll have all residents moved into our first sequence, which is 21 single-family homes. By early next year, we’ll have another ten two-bedroom lofts occupied. Q: What are some of the lessons you’ve learned from past projects that are helping guide future developments? A: All innovative projects are learning opportunities. One major lesson is the need for a significant shift in the American construction industry. Compared to Europe, where sustainable building practices are more advanced and efficient, the U.S. lags in terms of both financial structure and the materials used. We also need to address the utter lack of diversity in the trades—something Europe has done more effectively. We’ve also learned that collaboration is critical. Whether it’s working with local governments to navigate building codes or partnering with vendors to source sustainable materials, the

$129M From IRA Boosts Michigan’s Wind, Solar Plans

According to an announcement made by the state and federal governments in July, Michigan is set to receive a significant financial boost to aid in the expansion of large wind and solar projects. Specifically, $129 million in federal funds has been designated to streamline the processes involved in siting, zoning, and permitting large-scale renewable energy installations. This initiative aligns with the state’s goal to rapidly decarbonize its electric grid over the next decade. The funding, part of a $4.3 billion allocation being distributed across the United States, is sourced from the 2022 federal Inflation Reduction Act’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program. SBN Detroit interviewed Joel Howrani Heeres, director of community resilience at Public Sector Consultants, who also was Detroit’s first sustainability director, for his thoughts regarding how the money should and will be spent, potential challenges, geographical impact, and other topics. Q: Michigan recently received $129 million in federal funding to advance large wind and solar projects. How do you see it being allocated and what are the biggest priorities to address in terms of large wind and solar? A: I think that the state is rightfully deploying this money to help incentivize local governments to permit solar and wind projects within their boundaries. We have a very aggressive goal to achieve as a state – 60% renewable energy by 2030. The funds provide a significant incentive for communities to host renewable energy infrastructure, offering up to $5,000 per megawatt. Rural areas often lack the resources and personnel needed to review permits and manage other aspects of developing this infrastructure. This financial support will be instrumental in helping these communities navigate the complexities involved in such projects. Q: The funding comes from the Federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program, created by the Inflation Reduction Act. Can you tell us more about this and its specific influence in Michigan? A: The CPRG is one of the first grant programs to enable both planning and implementation to address climate change. There is funding allocated for metropolitan areas above a certain size. To me, this regional approach makes a lot of sense. Emissions don’t stop at city boundaries. For example, there are many heavy industries on the Detroit/Melvindale border that impact that whole area and beyond. Taking a regional approach and also statewide grants have been used to help EGLE do their planning as well. I was disappointed to see that Michigan’s metro areas did not get implementation money from this grant, but accelerating renewables throughout the state is important. Q: What are the challenges that come with such large-scale complex projects in Michigan? A: First, local permitting and project development. The amount of land required for renewable energy installations presents another challenge, especially in rural areas where agricultural land is at a premium. Convincing these communities to accept large renewable installations, particularly when the power generated is likely to be consumed elsewhere, can be difficult. Discussing the benefits and costs of hosting these installations has become a political issue. Communities want to see tangible benefits and are reluctant to give up their land without adequate compensation. Thus, providing financial incentives to these communities could be an effective approach. Another important consideration is determining, from a grid perspective, the most strategic locations to connect these large installations to ensure efficient power transmission. Q: Is there a long runway with projects like this from an execution and timeline standpoint? A: Yes, there is. The process from conceptualization to actual ground-breaking involves numerous steps. This includes navigating the political landscape, such as public hearings and potential opposition. Additionally, there are essential stages like securing permits and installing infrastructure. Each of these components requires considerable time and careful planning. Q: Is there a geographical component? What areas of Michigan will be most impacted? A: Rural areas will be impacted the most. Beyond that, I don’t think there will be geographic concentration, I think it will spread across the state. Q: Do you foresee local opposition from Michiganders regarding these projects, and, if so, what are your thoughts on how to address this? A: Yes. Just the other day I was driving through Washtenaw County and saw signs that read “No Industrial Solar.” The focus returns to the tangible benefits of these installations. It is essential for people to see clear advantages. For instance, if a local government receives $5,000 per megawatt to enhance local services — funds that would not have been available otherwise — it can help alleviate some of the opposition to these projects. This financial support can be directed toward improving community services, thereby showcasing the positive community benefits of the installations. Q: Federal money will also flow to workforce development programs. What are your thoughts on how these projects may boost the economy and put people in jobs? A: It’s a crucial aspect of our current situation. We are undergoing a significant energy transition, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, which represents a fundamentally different model. This transition requires Michiganders to acquire new skills to compete in the emerging green economy. Additionally, we’re moving toward the electrification of everything. By producing clean energy, we can electrify our homes, cars, and various aspects of our lives, as it all comes from a sustainable source. There is a critical need to retrain workers from the fossil fuel sector to participate in the electrified economy. Significant investments are being made in this area. Ultimately, this is a comprehensive ecosystem, and these changes will impact labor across all sectors. Q: What other ancillary benefits can we expect to accompany the execution of these projects? A: As we transition more of the energy load to cleaner technology, we’ll have less localized pollution, leading to statewide public health benefits. Additionally, there’s a significant potential for economic development. Michigan stands out as one of the most proactive states in terms of climate ambitions, which could attract industries seeking to operate on green power. Whether it’s tech companies, manufacturing firms, or other businesses, the state’s commitment to sustainability

New Leadership to Focus on Sustainability, Connectivity, Infrastructure 

Meagan Elliott began her tenure as president and CEO of the Belle Isle Conservancy on July 1, following a decade with the city of Detroit, culminating in serving as chief parks planner and deputy CFO overseeing development and grants.  Elliott spearheaded the Joe Louis Greenway Framework Plan and played a pivotal role as the city lead in a $350 million campaign for a unified greenway encompassing the Joe Louis Greenway and the Detroit Riverfront.   The Belle Isle Conservancy is dedicated to safeguarding the natural environment, preserving historic structures, and enhancing Belle Isle as a public park for the enjoyment of all, now and in the future. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, 5.6 million people visited the park last year.  SBN Detroit interviewed Elliott about the conservancy’s approach to sustainability and what impacts her work will have on Southeast Michigan businesses and residents.   Q: What part will sustainability play in your new role?  A: Sustainability is fundamental to everything we do, and I want to lift and advance it in new ways. The Belle Isle Conservancy has done and continues to do a lot of work toward this. One example is the Keep Belle Isle Beautiful campaign focused on reducing plastic waste on the island and in waterways. That initiative has taken off and now goes far beyond the cleanups themselves, focusing on environmental stewardship and informing educational programming that helps to drive our future leaders.   Caring for our planet forms the foundation of all our endeavors and is a filter for how we approach all our work, whether it be in support of habitat restoration, capital projects on the island, or new types of programming moving forward. I’m eager to collaborate with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in this ​​effort.  Q: How does your background position you for this role?   A: It’s in a couple of important ways. My tenure as chief parks planner was particularly formative, involving comprehensive work across all city green spaces, from neighborhood parks to a 30-mile greenway.  When we consider Detroit’s park infrastructure, connectivity emerges as a fundamental concept. Historically, Belle Isle has been perceived as a separate entity and not easily accessible. Moreover, with one in four people in Detroit lacking access to a vehicle, they face challenges moving around the city, ​being able to access our amazing ​metro parks​ system, ​ or getting Up North. Belle Isle is a treasure that rivals all of these spaces, and here it is right in our front yard. Connecting to a system of green space via the riverfront and the Joe Louis Greenway is essential. ​     ​  Connectedness extends beyond physical spaces to encompass the desires of residents and businesses surrounding Belle Isle as well. The Belle Isle Conservancy plays a crucial role as a steward and advocate, driving initiatives that reflect community wants and needs.  Also, my background in sociology has prepared me to spend time listening ​to residents and how they want to utilize their island ​and to make sense of the patterns that emerge in engagement with a diversity of constituents. ​     ​  Finally, I’ve spent the last three years as deputy CFO brokering partnerships between private fund​ers​, philanthropi​c entities​, and public ​partners​ and making initiatives happen by creating coalitions of folks. I want to put that same energy ​and investment ​behind Belle Isle.  Q: You led the Joe Louis Greenway Framework Plan, and were the city lead in the $350 million campaign for a unified greenway for the Joe Louis Greenway and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. How will this impact your work going forward?  A: I have an example. On my first day as president and CEO of the Belle Isle Conservancy, I was speaking at a press conference during which $20.7 million was received from the federal government ​for the continuing construction of ​the Joe Louis Greenway. This was a grant that the team worked on while I was still working for the City of Detroit. But I was there as the co-chair of the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership and was able to highlight the connection from the Joe Louis Greenway to the Iron Belle Trail, which ultimately will connect Belle Isle to Ironwood at the tip of the Upper Peninsula through a network of greenways.  Many individuals have dedicated themselves to this work for a long time, and I’m committed to utilizing my platform and voice to continue to advance this work.  Belle Isle is the epicenter of both this amazing network of green spaces and the Great Lakes. I can’t imagine a better geography for foregrounding environmental stewardship than on this island.   Q: What impact do you think the Belle Isle Conservancy has on businesses in Southeast Michigan?  A: I see the economic impact of public space as vast. It directly relates to employee decisions on where they choose to live and work.   Belle Isle ranks as the second most visited park in the country after Niagara Falls. I believe our efforts here are directly linked to attracting new talent to businesses in Southeast Michigan and bolstering our economy.   Q: In what way will you work with area businesses?  A: The conservancy already does a lot of work with businesses on many fronts.  One of the most immediately valuable impacts businesses have on Belle Isle is our corporate stewardship days. Businesses bring their teams to help clean up the park and connect with each other.   We also have a significant number of partners in the corporate community who see the value of Belle Isle for the community and invest in projects to help support the park. ​     ​  We also have the opportunity to look at the vendors utilized on the island and how to create more inroads for Detroit-based businesses to play a role in the construction, management, concessionaire, and other vendor partnerships.   There are endless opportunities to work together.    Q: What challenges do you expect to encounter from a sustainability aspect?  A: The challenge is always prioritization and how to choose projects and

Tony Reames Returns to U-M to Lead SEAS Detroit Sustainability Clinic

SEAS SUSTAINABILITY CLINIC TEAM

For two-plus years, Dr. Tony G. Reames was a Biden-Harris Administration presidential appointee, working in energy justice. Most recently he served as the Principal Deputy Director for the Office of State and Community Energy Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Now, he returns to the University of Michigan – where had worked as a research fellow – becoming the Tishman Professor of Environmental Justice and serving as the new Director of the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) Detroit Sustainability Clinic. Through support from the Kresge Foundation, the clinic was founded in 2021 to build long-term capacity and partnership in Detroit, and to connect residents, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and city government to its resources. Reames sat down with SBN Detroit to discuss this new role, the work of the clinic, and how it involves and impacts businesses in Southeast Michigan. Q: What is the impetus behind the clinic? A: The Detroit Sustainability Clinic came into existence based on the recognition that the several faculty in the School for Environment and Sustainability had projects with community-based organizations, government, and business partners in the city that we were approaching in silos. Operating together as a clinic allows us to more cohesively engage with community partners and approach these projects in a more efficient and effective way. Our mission is to be a hub for advancing sustainability and climate action in an equitable and just way. We want to foster long-term relationships with community-based organizations, local governments, and businesses in Detroit to support their sustainability and climate efforts from ideation to implementation. Q: What differentiates the work the clinic does from that of other national or local initiatives in the space? A: We want to be both additive and complementary. Also, what is unique about what we provide is that we can bring the full resources of the university to support sustainability and climate action in communities, centered on equity and justice. We have the opportunity to not only use our research and data but to also boost capacity for community-driven efforts through our students and faculty. Q: How does sustainability feature in the work the clinic does? A: Sustainability for me is recognizing the social, environmental, and economic impacts of the current climate crisis and how we use the research, teaching, and other resources of the University in deep collaboration with our community partners to support a community’s long-term existence. It’s the triple bottom line. We bring these aspects together to help communities with solutions-driven planning and implementation Q: Given the focus on Detroit communities, how does the Detroit Sustainability Action Agenda feature in the work the clinic is doing? A: I participated in planning efforts to develop the city’s Sustainability Action Agenda and Climate Strategy and the Detroit Climate Action Plan. These plans are the foundation for the areas of focus for the clinic. The Detroit Office of Sustainability is a clinic partner, and we have funding to work with the city to implement its climate strategy and Blight to Beauty Initiative. Supporting local sustainability and climate action is the core of what we do. As the clinic expands, I look forward to working with other local governments in Southeast Michigan to create and implement their sustainability and climate action plans. Q: How do you plan to involve and work with businesses in Detroit? A: I’ve been working with folks in Detroit for about ten years and the ingenuity in this city stands out. I’ve spent a good amount of time with entrepreneurs and start-ups that are working on new technology and other ways to help households operate more sustainably. I see the clinic acting as a conduit between businesses that have these technical solutions and communities that need these solutions. As a university, we also have this amazing opportunity to develop the next generation of the sustainability and climate workforce. Q: How do you think that impacts businesses in Southeast Michigan? A: I believe that exposing students to real-world challenges makes them better employees for the business and organizations they’ll go to work for. And I think that students who get involved with businesses and projects in Detroit are more likely to remain in Detroit and continue working here post-graduation. I’ve seen it happen. Once a student is exposed to the issues and opportunities here and has made a professional connection, they are more likely to join the workforce locally versus moving out of state. Q: What is the role of businesses in the community work you do? A: Both residents and businesses make up a community so it’s all interconnected. Businesses support residential neighborhoods and vice-versa, so our approach is place-based, taking into account how the community operates and interacts as a whole. Also, when we think about the growth in different sectors in Southeast Michigan such as landscape architects focused on natural solutions to flooding, engineers working on the next iteration of mobility that eliminates pollution, or those developing a future where all housing is affordable and net zero energy, there is an ecosystem that must connect our greatest challenges to resources and solutions. And that is happening here. Businesses that can tap into this ecosystem and be a part of it will be the most successful businesses going forward. Q: How do you think you can help develop and support this ecosystem in your new role? A: I recently spent 2.5 years at the U.S. Department of Energy focused on designing federal programs with equity and justice at the core, and that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to move forward in this role. We have an unprecedented opportunity to move the needle on this. Businesses now have to focus on equity in order to access much of the current federal and state funding, and they have to meaningfully engage with the community as well. This is an exciting time! The Cleanup Club: Working to Mitigate Plastic Pollution in the Great Lakes

HANNAH TIZEDES IS THE FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CLEANUP CLUB Before founding The Cleanup Club, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting our communities and Great Lakes from plastic pollution through cleanups and creativity, I amassed a collection of over 100,000 pieces of plastic debris from the Great Lakes shorelines during solo cleanups. I used the colorful found objects to create thought-provoking art pieces and installations to inspire conversations about how we can all play a role in protecting the places we love.  Creativity has continued to play a key role in The Cleanup Club’s mission to protect our communities and Great Lakes from plastic pollution while having fun. We aim to serve as an approachable source to help educate and spark dialogue with people online and in person about the urgent need for action to protect our freshwater resources.  In 2016, a study from the Rochester Institute of Technology revealed that nearly 22 million pounds of plastic pollution enter our Great Lakes every year, with major cities such as Detroit, Chicago, and Toronto being primary sources. By 2024, plastic production has continued to increase globally, and so has the urgent need to protect our waterways from harmful impacts. This is particularly crucial as these bodies of water provide drinking water to over 40 million people across the US and Canada.  Recent studies have shown that topics such as climate change and plastic pollution often leave people feeling frightened and negative. With the rise of terms like “eco-anxiety” and studies emphasizing the growing harms of plastic pollution, The Cleanup Club aims to push forward crucial work for a more sustainable future and cleaner waters. Demand, Support for Sustainable Events Boosts Schupan Business Unit

Wixom-based Schupan began in 1968 as a six-person scrap metal recycler. Today, the company has 600 employees and offers multiple services related to metals and plastic, including recycling, fabrication, and materials trading. Schupan also provides sustainable events planning – planning, managing, and executing sustainable efforts for sporting events, festivals, conferences, and businesses, among others.   Jessica Loding, Schupan’s chief sustainability officer and director of events, said this segment of the industry is growing as more businesses and organizations seek assistance in creating more sustainable events.   SBN Detroit interviewed Loding about her work in this area and the industry trends.   Q: Schupan was incorporated in 1968. Give us a little background about the company and how it’s evolved.   A: Schupan started as a metal recycling company in Kalamazoo and has grown to handle beverage container recycling nationwide. We also broker materials internationally, have a multimillion-dollar inventory of aluminum and plastic parts that we sell to manufacturers, help manage the disposition of electronics, and offer sustainable event management services.   Q: How has recycling evolved through the years in your experience?   A: The industry has grown vastly over the last couple of decades as more and more people and businesses realize the benefits of recycling, from the perspective of climate change and the creation of the circular economy. As technology has developed and end markets for commodities have expanded, the industry has realized substantial growth to the benefit of all parties.   Q: Tell us more about your Sustainable Event Management Services.   A: Schupan was an early adopter of these services, and only a dozen or so companies specialize in event recycling. We support various events, including music festivals, art fairs, conferences, sporting events, casinos, hotels, community events, and business events.   Q: Why do you think businesses should adopt sustainable events?   A: Consumers expect companies to operate with a focus on the environment, their carbon footprint, and their recycling efforts. So, companies that embrace sustainability can have a more meaningful engagement with customers.   Entities and businesses that go above and beyond to create new ways of thinking and acting around sustainability can develop a great brand story. We have partnered with some to pioneer some really interesting new recycling techniques.   Q: What is an example of this?   A: We worked with Dow last year and its Great Lakes Bay Invitational to develop golf tees from the plastic mesh fencing used at the venue. We partnered with Evolve Golf, Bull Engineered Products, and KW Plastics to turn the mesh into pellets and then mold the pellets into tees.   Q: What are the biggest challenges that businesses face when it comes to sustainable event planning and management?   A: The first challenge is the economics. It takes money, and budgets don’t always allow for the cash flow needed. They often rely on sponsorship money to provide funding and advance the programs.   The second is the availability of services. They need to locate labor, have resources to support the efforts, find a waste hauler, and more, but that takes time and effort and can be a challenge.   Q: Are you seeing more companies wanting this service?   A: Yes, we’ve seen a large increase in inquiries for services over the last couple of years, especially since the pandemic. I think it made people more aware. We are now receiving more calls than we are making on the business development side, which is nice to see.   Q: How has sustainable event management evolved over the time Schupan has been involved in it?   A: Sustainable event management used to be called event recycling. It focused on bottles, cans, and food waste. Now, it encompasses much more. It goes beyond waste reduction to calculating the carbon footprint, identifying carbon reductions, water conservation planning, and community integration. It’s exciting to see how it’s grown.   Q: What are the most impactful things businesses can do to make an event more sustainable?   A: Any event can include basic recycling to divert items from landfills. Events, in general, have huge economic value—bringing local and out-of-town people into the community to dine, shop, and spend time is important.   Q: What trends are you seeing with the businesses you work with?   A: More and more events are aligning with corporate sponsors, a great way for businesses to get involved and gain recognition. This is a big shift. Corporations want to align with sustainability programming with public facing. The Greening of Detroit: Working to Create Healthy Urban Communities Through Trees, Education, and Jobs

Established in 1989, The Greening of Detroit is a nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, green spaces, healthy living, education, and job opportunities. To date, it has planted 147,000 trees and trained more than 1,000 people through its five-year-old workforce development program. Putting trees in the ground is job one for the organization, but it also is involved in stormwater management and providing landscaping services to residents and businesses in the communities they serve. President Lionel Bradford has been with the nonprofit since 2010 and is proud of its 35-year history. SBN Detroit interviewed Bradford about the organization’s programs, impact, and future. Q: What was the impetus to begin The Greening of Detroit? A: For years Detroit was known as the Paris of the Midwest, partly because of the tree canopy cover the city used to have. Between 1950 and 1980 Detroit lost over a half million trees due to Dutch Elm Disease, urbanization, and neglect due to financial struggles. In 1989, The Greening of Detroit was founded to reforest the city of Detroit. Since its inception, 147,000 trees have been planted throughout the city. We also started a youth employment program as a way to educate and take care of these trees. Our Green Corps Summer Youth program at its height employed 200 high school students. That number decreased due to COVID-19, but it’s coming back up. In a nutshell, our organization has two main pillars: workforce development and green infrastructure. Q: What are you currently working on in terms of tree planting? A: We are in the third year of a five-year strategic plan where we are looking to plant 20,000 trees throughout Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, and train 300 individuals who have barriers to employment. This plan fits into a larger initiative we are involved in called the Detroit Tree Equity Partnership. This is a collaboration with American Forest, DTE Energy, and the City of Detroit in which we are planning to plant 75,000 trees over the next five years. There is a buzz in the city right now in terms of trees. We’ve done a lot of engagement and outreach. Recently we conducted a 500-tree giveaway, and there were still cars lined up after we gave away the last tree. It’s great to see this. Q: What is your involvement with the Walter Meyers Nursery? A: Walter Meyers is a tree nursery on 72 acres in Rouge Park that for years went untouched. In 2004, The Greening of Detroit – with the city’s permission – took over managing that property to serve as a training ground for our adult workforce development. We have used it as an outdoor classroom setting. In 2017, we put together a master plan to turn it back into a working nursery operation. As an organization, we are looking for ways to generate revenue for our training programs and to plant our trees. We want to control our destiny and cut down the carbon footprint involved in having trees shipped in. We have planted over 4,000 trees in the nursery and harvested our first 200 trees last year. The goal is to get to a point where we are selling 5,000 trees annually to municipalities, the City of Detroit, and the community. Q: What sustainable impact do you think this brings? A: In addition to creating green infrastructure in the city, community engagement is at the heart of what we do. Our job is to get trees in the ground, but we do not want to impose our will. We want to be invited into communities. Not only do we want residents to have a say, but we also want them to be a part of the work. This is a model that speaks volumes in terms of sustainability, and it’s held up across the state and the country. Q: How does The Greening of Detroit impact businesses? A: We engage and work with business owners in the communities we are involved in. Many of them bring us in to green their properties. The more green space we can add for businesses, the more it helps aesthetics and foot traffic. Green space and economic development go hand in hand. Also, from an economic standpoint, our education program puts people into jobs doing work around the city, which enhances the economic viability of Detroit as well. Q: In what other ways does the organization create green infrastructure in the city? A: Stormwater management. We have installed three major bioretention ponds around the city that hold up to a million gallons of water. These are in Rouge Park, Chandler Park, and Eliza Howell Parks. We also work with residents and businesses to replace impervious surfaces with green infrastructure through our Land + Water WORKS Coalition. Q: You have an adult workforce program from which over 1,000 Detroiters have graduated in the past five years. How does this work? A: This is a six-week program called the Detroit Conservation Corps. Sixty percent of those who have graduated were previously incarcerated. We are passionate about helping that population get credentials and secure jobs that pay decent wages. We work with a network of businesses looking to employ, most from the tree care and landscaping industries. These companies work in tandem with our advisory committee to help us build our curriculum and help with job placement. We have hired a small percentage of our trainees ourselves. Q: What is the future of The Greening of Detroit? A: Community engagement will always be a focus. We also are rebuilding our environmental education. These programs fell by the wayside before and during COVID-19, but we are working to get into schools, facilitate field trips, and educate our youth. We truly believe that getting the Meyers Nursery operations up and running is key for us moving forward. It will be important for us to generate our revenue. As Recycling Grows, So Does the Need for New Strategies, Technology

In 1995, after graduating from the College for Creative Studies with a degree in industrial and product design and an eye toward bettering the environment, Keith Zendler founded Environmental Services of North America Inc. in Detroit. Nearly thirty years later, the company retooled and relaunched to focus on waste management and upgraded its technology to help it expand and improve its services and expand its network of partners domestically and globally. We interviewed founder and owner Keith Zendler to learn more. Q: Tell us about RecycleMax. A: RecycleMax is a tech-based reboot of a company I founded in 1995. At that time, we had a plant in Detroit and a fleet of 14 trucks and we were focused mainly on paper and similar recyclables. We now provide the environmentally sound management of virtually all solid and liquid waste materials. I have always been interested in sustainability from a community standpoint – in building stronger and more sustainable communities through technology. So, I sold the original recycling company in 2008 and started a civic tech company focused on designing an online community network for people and organizations to better work together. Through this company, I launched a multisided SaaS platform with the intent of improving stakeholder communication, collaboration, and engagement to help leaders solve political, health, social, environmental, and economic issues. Eventually, I realized I could apply this technology to the recycling industry and provide businesses with robust and customized waste management programs that help them meet their sustainability goals and reduce their carbon footprint. So, RecycleMax was relaunched as a tech-based company in 2020. We use the same technology we offer clients internally for our operations. The crux of the platform is its ability to facilitate a community network and real-time communication. We have used it to build a global network of recyclers and haulers that we can leverage for clients. Q: How is the industry different now, than in the 1990s?  A: There was a time when we had to push companies to recycle, and they would only do so if we could show that it either saved them money or at the very least did not incur additional expenses. That is no longer the driver. Companies are doing it now no matter what. That is a surprising shift. We work heavily in the auto industry, and I’ve been amazed at how progressive these companies are and how seriously the industry is taking environmental measures. Adding to that, until recently, most of our recyclables were shipped overseas, and we relied on China to handle them. A lot of waste was ending up in the ocean. China shut that off and it certainly caused a disruption, but ultimately it made the industry stronger. There are more and more companies being established in the U.S. to handle these materials. The industry has made a tremendous amount of progress, and it’s exciting. Q: Who are some of your customers in Detroit and Southeast Michigan? A: Union Tank Car Company, Detroit Manufacturing Systems, Fishbeck, and Piston Automotive to name a few. Q: In your experience, what are the challenges companies face with recycling? A: Education and incentivization. Employees often need to be trained in why and how to recycle and handle their waste materials. It’s also vitally important for individuals to understand the difference they are making. Providing that data offers motivation to continue the momentum toward success. Q: What are the biggest challenges you see that businesses have with waste management? A: Participation is probably the biggest challenge. Companies need all employees on board. Training and education are critical to a successful recycling program. There is still a lot of work to do in getting people to take recycling seriously. Plastic is another big challenge for the industry. There are types of plastics that are not commonly recycled due to the unique resins involved. It can become difficult for companies to manage this. Trucking and logistics are a challenge as well. Transportation costs can be the biggest component when it comes to recycling. Q: What are the biggest opportunities? A: I think there is a massive global opportunity in recycling. And by applying technology, the potential to streamline efficiencies is huge. I never thought I’d be in recycling for over thirty years, but It’s a wonderful industry. Ascend Energy & Mobility Accelerator Works to Bring Sustainability Solutions to Fruition

The Ascend Energy & Mobility Accelerator – a collaboration of VentureWell and TechTown Detroit funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Technology Translations – offers support to entrepreneurs creating solutions focused on emissions reductions, smart mobility technologies, and infrastructure development. Ascend is entering its second year after providing resources and training to ten startups in 2023. SBN Detroit spoke to Tricia Compas-Markman, director of National Venture Programs for VentureWell about the program and its impact on businesses and the economy in Southeast Michigan. Q: What is the Ascend Energy and Mobility Accelerator and how did it come to be? A: Ascend is powered by VentureWell and TechTown Detroit and is funded through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Technology Translations. VentureWell, a nonprofit providing training, funding, and resources to science- and technology-focused innovators and startup teams across the country partnered with TechTown in 2017 to create an investor engagement program to educate innovators and entrepreneurs on how to raise funds to support their inventions. We began to see a gap. These individuals and startups needed more support when it came to customer discovery and commercial launch. We received a $500,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Technology Transitions to create programming and support for energy startup teams and entrepreneurs and launched the Ascend Energy & Mobility Accelerator, which trained its inaugural cohort of ten Michigan startups in 2023. We were then one of four incubators to receive a grand prize in the Energy Program for Innovation Clusters (EPIC). This prize funding will also support VentureWell and TechTown Detroit in running additional Ascend programs in 2024-2025 and beyond. Q: Tell me about the program. A: It’s a six-week program that helps bridge that gap I mentioned between customer discovery and investment readiness. We focus on mostly hardware solutions around energy and mobility problems, so these can be innovations around EV batteries, charging stations, safety, performance, and more. Q: What are some examples of startups you worked with in the launch-year program? A: Surge Mobility is a great example. This is a software management program that streamlines the EV charging process for drivers. Another example is Freight Miner, a startup based in Ann Arbor that’s developing autonomous driving technologies for commercial fleet trucks. Energy-focused startups in the cohort included ThermoVerse, which is developing cost-effective heating and cooling energy retrofits for low-to-middle-income housing property managers, enabling energy-efficient building upgrades without the need to open up walls. Another is VMX Green, a woman-owned recycling company that is now developing a recycling process for automotive end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, allowing for safer and more sustainable disposal of hazardous waste materials. Q: How does the work you are doing involve businesses and the economy in Southeast Michigan? A: In a couple of ways. First, VentureWell acts as a connector, so we are working within the regional ecosystem to help these innovators and startups connect and network. This provides opportunities for all. The community is already robust, and we are there to elevate existing resources. Second, we bring in mentors who act as an extended part of the teaching team. Many of our mentors are active investors and successful entrepreneurs who also assist in getting the teams connected to local business opportunities and networks. Example mentors include Erika Block, Ellington Ellis, Anne Maghas, Domineca Neal, and DeWayne Williams.  VentureWell and TechTown Detroit are also supported by an active regional advisory committee made up of mobility and energy experts in Detroit and the local region, including Tu Le (Mobility EIR, TechTown), Alisyn Malek (serial entrepreneur and mobility expert), Clay Phillips (Mobility Technology Lead, Michigan Small Business Development Center), and Sherelle Streeter (Senior Mobility Strategist, Office of Mobility Strategy – Detroit). Q: What is the end goal? A: The end goal for the teams following the intensive six-week program is to make progress (validate product-market fit, clearly tell their story, and understand the financing landscape) and leave the program with a community of people supporting them, including peers, program mentors, and connections to the local ecosystem so they can achieve their next milestones. Our intention is for them to come out with a viable financial and business model. During the final two days of the program, we host in-person networking events at TechTown to connect these startups to partners, service providers, and investors with the intention of creating more resources and opportunities. It can be overwhelming to navigate the ecosystem here so we provide support to our alumni teams and, oftentimes, those who don’t make the cohort and need more preparation to do so. Q: How do you think the startups coming out of the program will impact the region? A: First, these entrepreneurs and startups create job opportunities for others. We also had two teams last year that were not from Michigan, who are now establishing business operations in Michigan – Surge Mobility from Turkey and Voltaic Marine Inc. from Beaverton, Oregon. There is a lot of innovation coming out of Michigan, but often founders leave to follow the money. When we can keep talent here, and also bring talent in, I think that’s a big win.
